Night Sky Plan ("we", "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy describes what information the website and the mobile app collect, how it is used, who else handles it, and the choices you have. It applies to nightskyplan.com and the Night Sky Plan app for iOS and Android.
Information We Collect
Account information you give us when you register: name, username, email address and, if you choose to add one, your mobile number, plus the date you accepted this policy and the User Agreement
Email address if you subscribe to launch notifications
Observing locations you enter (a city, ZIP code, address or coordinates) and the resulting latitude, longitude, time zone and sky-brightness estimate
Content you create in the service: observation log entries, observing programs and runs, sky-plan preferences and weather checks
Technical information needed to run the service: sign-in times, the IP address and device label of each sign-in, delivery records for the emails and text messages we send you, and standard web-server logs
The mobile app does not request access to your device location, contacts, camera, photos or any other device sensor. Observing locations are always typed in by you.
How We Use Your Information
To compute astronomical predictions and fetch weather for your observing location
To store and display your observation log, programs, runs, plans and preferences on the website and in the app
To verify your mobile number, if you add one, and to send account messages such as verification codes, password-reset codes and, if you ask for one, an invitation to a friend; without a verified number you receive no text messages from us
To keep the service secure: rate limiting, sign-in history and an activity log the site operator can review
To let the site operator know when a new account is created or a member returns, so the invite-only service can be looked after
To send launch notification emails (subscribers only)
Service Providers
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not use advertising or analytics trackers. To operate the service we rely on a small number of providers who process data on our behalf and only for the purpose described:
Text messages (verification and reset codes, invitations) are delivered through Esendex, which receives the destination mobile number and the message text
Emails (password resets, invitations, launch notifications) are delivered through Resend, which receives the destination email address and the message
Weather comes from the NOAA Aviation Weather Center; requests contain only the coordinates of your observing location, rounded, and no account details
When you set up an observing location, the place name, ZIP code or address you type is sent to a third-party AI geocoding service to resolve it to coordinates; your account details are not included
The service runs on servers we operate at a hosting provider; nightly encrypted backups are stored with a backup provider
Data Storage and Retention
Your data is stored on our servers and kept for as long as your account exists. Sign-in sessions and app tokens expire automatically when unused. Message delivery records and the activity log are kept for troubleshooting and security. Data is backed up in encrypted form and retained according to our standard retention policy.
Deleting Your Account
You can delete your account at any time from Profile on the website or in the mobile app. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your account, observatories, plans, observation log, program runs, weather checks, invitations and sign-in sessions are removed from our servers.
Your Choices
You can view and change your name, username, email address and mobile number in Profile at any time
You can export your current sky plan from the app or website, and delete individual log entries, runs and weather checks
You can delete your whole account as described above
You can turn off night-vision mode and other preferences at any time; these are stored on your account so the website and app match
Cookies
The website uses a session cookie to keep you signed in and a preference cookie for night-vision mode. The mobile app uses a sign-in token stored securely on your device instead of cookies. No tracking or advertising cookies are used.
Children
Night Sky Plan is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email support@nightskyplan.com and we will delete it.
Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Material changes will be announced on the website or in the app before they take effect.
